What Website Maintenance Actually Includes (and Costs)

Ashton Group · Updated August 2026

Most businesses treat their website like a roof: ignore it until water comes through the ceiling. Maintenance is the difference between a site that quietly works for years and a 2 a.m. discovery that the site, and its backups, have been broken for months.

What a real care plan includes

What it costs

Site typeTypical monthlyIncludes
Static or brochure site$150–$300 / monthUpdates, monitoring, backups, minor edits
Business site with forms/CMS$300–$800 / monthEverything above plus dependency management, form testing, content support
Business-critical site or portal$800–$1,500 / monthPriority response, staging environment, monthly report, performance checks
Application operations$1,000–$4,000 / monthFull ops: monitoring, alert response, patching, capacity, incident handling

The math that makes it obvious

One day of downtime for a business doing even modest online lead generation typically costs more than a year of a basic care plan. A single compromised site cleanup, $2,000–$10,000 at emergency rates plus the reputation damage of a blacklisted domain, costs more than a decade of one. Maintenance is not an expense next to those numbers; it is insurance priced at a fraction of the deductible.

Questions to ask any maintenance provider

Frequently asked questions

Can't my hosting company handle maintenance?

Hosts keep servers running; nobody at a hosting company is watching your site, testing your backups, or patching your application. Those are different jobs, and the gap between them is where sites die.

Do static sites need maintenance?

Less, which is a reason we recommend them, but domains still expire, certificates still renew, content still changes, and monitoring still matters. Hence the lower tier, not a zero tier.

What happens if I skip maintenance?

Usually nothing, for a while. The bill arrives all at once: a compromise, a failed restore, or an expired certificate on the weekend of your biggest campaign.
